F150, F250, F350 & Raptor Rooftop Tent: Frequently Asked Questions

Are rooftop tents really worth it?

A rooftop tent is expensive camping equipment. And investing in one requires great consideration. If camping, hiking, and exploring the wild is your favorite pastime, the rooftop tent will bring great benefits to you. Below are some reasons I think you should get yourself a rooftop tent.

6 reasons to have a rooftop tent
6 important reasons why you should have a rooftop tent for camping trips with your Ford trucks

Reason #1: Rooftop tents bring convenience to your camping trips. Just set up the tent on the F150 rooftop tent rack and open it up anytime you see a fine place to camp.

Reason #2: Sleeping on the ground can be uncomfortable. Nobody can enjoy a relaxing nap on uneven and dirty ground. But the thick mattress on the rooftop tents a pretty comfortable and cozy.

Reason #3: Placing your camping tent on the ground is like inviting the bugs, pests, and wildlife into your temporary home. But with the elevated rooftop tent, you are safe even in the wild.

Reason #4: The tent is designed to regulate the temperature. So, it will stay warm during the night and remain cool during the day.

Reason #5: You have spare space within your vehicle with rooftop tents at the top of the tent rack.

Reason #6: Last but not least, the rooftop tent will look pretty cool, giving you an all-new camping experience.

How to install a rooftop tent on your truck?

Rooftop tents come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Most rooftop tent packages come with a complete tool kit. You just have to install the tent on the rooftop tent rack.

When you open the rooftop tent box, you will find the hardware, tent cover, ladder and ladder brackets, steel mounting plates, channel sliders, and bolts. Now follow the steps below to carefully install your new tent atop your vehicle.

Step 1: Mount the channel slides parallel to the tent hinge. The tracks need to be in complete alignment with the pre-drilled holes at the tent’s base.

Step 2: Use the bolts and washers between the mattress and the tent base. Make sure the bolts are tightly secured into the channel slides.

Step 3: Attach the ladder brackets. Turn over the tent and slide the bolts and washers to secure the ladder with the tent.

Step 4: Mount the ladder into the ladder brackets. Then, tighten the ladder bolts.

Step 5: Once the tent base is fixed, attach the tent cover to the C channel. This is where the cover slides into. As soon as it gets fixed, zip up the cover.

Step 6: Lift the tent onto most of the tent rack. While placing the tent on the rack, make sure to decide the opening setup of your tent.

Step 7: Place the channel sliders and bolts into the mounting track. Slide them until they are extended across the roof rack crossbar. To get the bolt to the other side of the crossbar, lift the tent a tiny bit.

Step 8: Attach the steel mounting plates to make them go under the mounting tracks.

Step 9: Finally, place the end caps on the mounting tracks.

Now, start your car and begin your camping trip.

You can also check this video to see how to install a rooftop tent on a pickup truck. It shows a Toyota truck but no worries, this guide works for our F-series trucks as well!

Can a truck cap support a rooftop tent?

Yes. Most trucks owners attach a camper shell, a.k.a truck topper or truck cap, on the vehicle’s bed. They are strong enough to support the heavyweight of rooftop tents. But as rooftop tents are heavy equipment, you need to install a roof rack on the camper shell to support the rooftop tent fully. Another benefit of adding a roof rack is the extra storage space making camping more fun.

Wrapping It Up

Rooftop tents are a fine addition to your camping accessories. They are a good idea for campers to stargaze and double the thrill. Among the five tents recommended, personally, I think that Raptor Series Offgrid Camping Rooftop Tent is the most extraordinary rooftop tent. It is high in quality and bursting with awesome features.

Nonetheless, consider the usage and comforts that you wish to enjoy. This will further help you make the right decision. And then, you have my informative guide to help you make a favorable decision.
